Shaver ~ The complete Composite
by shaverbeef on Sunday 26 September 2004

Development began in 1959 by Dr Donald Shaver in Canada, stabilised in 1985, introduced to NZ in 1990. Shavers represent 40 years experience of fully recorded composite breeding.

Using Shaver Composites will maximise hybrid vigour in YOUR Beef Herd

Commercial cattlemen have seen the benefits of extra production through crossbreeding.

The increased production level is known as heterosis or hybrid vigour and occurs when unrelated breeds or lines are crossed.

With-in the Shaver Composite breed, heterosis becomes a transmitted trait as a result of a broader based gene pool, thus a more frequent blending of dissimilar genes occurs resulting in higher heterosis being maintained.

The Shaver Composite will balance terminal and maternal genetics and improve commercial cow breeding herds.

  • Shaver cattle are the most advanced Composite beef breed available world-wide.
  • Shaver Composites are derived from nine breeds of Cattle and retain higher levels of heterosis than composites derived from only three or four breeds.
  • Shaver composites do not contain Angus, Hereford, Friesian or Simmental genetics, therefore, even greater heterosis is available when used over these breeds.
  • Shaver Composites are stabilised and consistent to type, colour, and performance.
  • Shaver possess an unbeatable temperament and exhibit superior growth rates, carcass yield and quality.
